Villa Mariposa is located in the beautiful area of Agios Matthaios (meaning St. Mathews) on the Akrotiri peninsular just a few minutes’ drive from Chania, Crete’s second largest city. The villa is set on an elevated position on the top of a cliff and offers spectacular unobstructed views to Chania city, the sea and the White Mountains (Lefka Ori) of Crete, while it is equidistant to the sea of the Souda Bay and the north coast of Chania. The Agios Matthaios area is famous among the locals for its pine forest which is ideal for walks and cycling and for the Venizelos Monument, where Eleftherios Venizelos and his son Sophocles are buried. Eleftherios Venizelos is one of the most important and influential political figures in Modern Greek history.

The bustling city of Chania, magnet to a large number of visitors every year, with the scenic Venetian Harbour and the Old Town is just down the road, numerous beaches such as Agios Onoufrios, Kalathas, Tersanas, Macherida, Stavros, Marathi, Loutraki and Seitan Limania are scattered around and within a range of 20km, a kids club with dining facilities is located under a kilometer from the villa, the Chania International Airport is under 11km from the villa while the famous view cafes–restaurants of the city are located at about one kilometer from Villa Mariposa.
Akrotiri apart from being a famous area for its beautiful beaches, it is home to many beautiful monasteries, within close proximity to Villa Mariposa. To mention a few: Holy Triad Monastery built in the 16th century, Gouverneto Monastery built in the 15th century, Catholic Monastery, the oldest monastery in Crete built sometime between the 6th-10th century, Saint John Nun’s Monastery at Korakies, built in the 17th century.
