BALOS – GRAMVOUSA

The famous lagoon of Balos is situated in the northwest part of Crete, 56km northwest of Chania and 17 km northwest of Kissamos. It is formed between the cape of Gramvousa and the small cape Tigani. It is undoubtedly the most photographed beach of Crete, famous for its turquoise waters, its natural wild beauty, and its gorgeous exotic scenery. The lagoon of Balos has white sand and exotic white, blue, and turquoise waters. The sea is very shallow and warm, ideal for small children. At some parts the sand has a pink colour due to the millions crushed shells. Behind the rocks, in the borders of the lagoon, the sea is deeper and the water is colder, ideal for exploration with mask and flatters. The wider area of Balos and Gramvousa has rare species of flora and fauna, and it is protected by the “Natura 2000” scheme. Mavropetrites (a species of hawk), falakrokorakes and cormorants nestle in the caves of the area. In addition, the place is shelter for the Mediterranean seal and the sea turtle Careta-Careta.

MENIES (near the ancient Diktynna)

Menies is a coastal area located 45km northwest of Chania at the northeast coast of cape Rodopou, at the exit of the gorge Founta. Menies is situated at the borders of the archaeological site of ancient Diktynna, the most important worship temple of goddess Vritomartis, who is believed to be goddess Diana. It is a marvelous remote beach with pebbles and deep crystal clear waters. Due to the fact that the place is not affected by winds that usually afflict the area, it is the ideal place for those who want isolation and privacy. Close to Menies there is a small beach called Chironisia known by few and accessible only through sea.

THODOROU

Thodorou, a small island with crystal clear water spread in 697sqm that offers shelter to the Cretan Ibex or else Kri-Kri. The access to the general public is limited since the island is a national park protected by international laws. However, people are allowed to discreetly approach the beaches of the island for rest, diving or swimming.
